Virtual worlds provide a sense of community not easily experiences in online learning management systems or even video conferencing. Jibe provides easy virtual avatar-based meetings. Jibe is a browser-based solution developed by Reaction Grid (http://reactiongrid.com/). This means you can access a virtual world simply by entering a URL such as: http://jibe.niu.edu/aliworld/. Jibe worlds are developed through Unity 3d, which is a profession grade game development tool.

Currently there is an app for Android that can be used to join Jibe virtual worlds. iPad app is still in development.

NIU projects that have used Jibe so far include:

  • Teacher professional development training
  • Meetings with Jibe developers
